Why We Pair Wood and Glass
Glass is a medium of light, depth, and movement, but to feel truly wearable, it often requires a counterpoint. This is the core philosophy behind our “grounded” designs, where the fluidity of flame-worked glass meets the steady, organic weight of carved wood.
The Anchoring Power of Wood
In pieces like the Wood Shank Blue Glass Ring, a rounded blue glass form is set into a hand-sculpted wooden shank. This pairing is intentional; the wood introduces warmth, texture, and grounding weight, anchoring the glass both visually and physically. The result is a piece that has a bold, steady presence, designed to be worn as both a personal adornment and a sculptural object.
Sculptural Balance and Material Honesty
We explore this balance further in the Pressed Glass Flower Cluster Ring, where a hand-shaped wooden shank provides the structural foundation for an intricate cluster of handmade glass flowers. The soft pastel hues of the layered petals are anchored by the wood’s organic density, creating a composition that balances softness, structure, and light. This same aesthetic is found in our Fire and Embers necklace, which interspersed natural wood beads with lampworked glass to maintain an earthy, tactile feel.
Grounded in the Making
Because each piece is made individually with no molds and no repeats, these material contrasts are always deliberate. Every finished work carries the “marks of its making,” whether it is the smooth surface of a lampworked bead or the natural grain of a carved wooden shank.
This approach is rooted in my history at the bench; I’ve been working with glass and metal for over 16 years, drawn to materials that demand control, patience, and heat. At ZMJStudio, each piece is Shaped by Fire, Formed with Intention, and Finished by Hand. We believe in an honest process—no shortcuts and no mass production—ensuring that your jewelry is a one-of-a-kind result of time and skill.
